How to Switch Your Dog to Raw Food

How do I switch my dog from kibble to raw?

Most healthy adult dogs do well with a gradual switch over 7 to 10 days: start with about a quarter raw, and increase every few days as stools stay normal. Some dogs handle a straight swap fine. Puppies, seniors and dogs with sensitive stomachs should go slower.

Which protein should I start with?

One protein at a time. Start with something mild, stick with it for a couple of weeks, then introduce the next. That way if something doesn't agree with your dog, you know exactly what it was.

How much raw food does my dog need?

A common starting point for adult dogs is 2 to 3 percent of ideal body weight per day, adjusted for age and activity. Bring your dog's weight to the store and we'll do the math with you.

What changes should I expect?

Smaller, firmer stools are the first thing most people notice. Less drinking is normal too, since raw food has far more moisture than kibble.

Do I need to talk to my vet?

If your dog has a medical condition, is on medication or is immunocompromised, yes, talk to your vet first.
