Best Food for Itchy Dogs
Can food make my dog itchy?
It can. Food sensitivities often show up as itchy paws, ears and belly, recurring ear problems or dull coat. Environmental allergies, fleas and skin infections cause the same symptoms, so if the itch is severe or won't quit, see your vet to rule those out.
What should I feed an itchy dog?
Simplify. A single-protein food with a short ingredient list makes it possible to figure out what your dog reacts to. Chicken and beef are the most common triggers simply because they're in almost everything.
What is a novel protein?
A protein your dog has never eaten, like rabbit, duck or venison. Feed only that for 8 to 12 weeks, treats included, and watch whether the itching settles. Then reintroduce proteins one at a time.
Does raw food help with itching?
Many owners see improvement because raw diets tend to be single-protein and free of the fillers found in a lot of kibble. It's not a cure-all, and it works best as part of a proper elimination approach.
What else helps?
Omega-3s support skin and coat. Ask us in store about options that fit your dog.
