Why Raw? Species-Appropriate Nutrition for Dogs and Cats

What "species-appropriate" actually means

Dogs and cats are carnivores. Cats are obligate carnivores, which means they literally can't survive without animal protein. Dogs are technically classified as scavenging carnivores. Their teeth, jaws, stomach acid, and digestive tract all evolved to process raw meat, organs, and bone, not corn and wheat.

That's not opinion. That's anatomy. Compare your dog's mouth to your own. Pointed teeth designed to tear, not flat molars to grind grain. A short digestive tract designed to push raw food through fast, before bacteria can multiply. Stomach acid up to 100 times more acidic than yours, designed to dissolve raw bone.

When we feed kibble, we're feeding biology that doesn't match the body it's going into. The body adapts, but it works harder.

What happens on kibble

Most commercial kibble is 30 to 60 percent carbohydrates. Dogs have no nutritional need for carbs. Cats can barely process them. Carbs are in the bag because they're cheap and they hold the kibble together when extruded.

The body has to do something with those carbs. It converts them to glucose, then either burns them for energy or stores them as fat. Constantly elevated blood sugar means the pancreas is constantly working. Long term, this is linked to weight gain, diabetes risk, and chronic low-grade inflammation.

Kibble is also dehydrating. Cats especially evolved to get most of their water from prey. A cat eating only kibble is in a constant state of mild dehydration, which is why kidney disease is the leading cause of death in older cats.

What happens on raw

Raw food is what the body is built for. Protein and fat from species-appropriate sources, moisture from the meat itself, naturally-occurring enzymes that help digestion. Nothing extruded, nothing high-heat-cooked into oxidation, nothing sprayed with synthetic vitamins to replace what processing destroyed.

Is raw right for every pet?
