How to Switch Cat Litter (Including to Tofu Litter): The 7-10 Day Mixing Protocol

Cats are particular about litter. The texture under their paws, the smell, the depth, all of it matters. Switching abruptly is a common reason cats start peeing outside the box. The fix is a gradual mixing protocol over 7 to 10 days.

Why cats refuse new litter

Cats imprint on litter texture as kittens. Whatever they used in their first 8 weeks becomes "normal." New textures feel weird, sometimes uncomfortable. The smell of new litter (especially scented) can also be off-putting.

Cats don't have words to say "I don't like this." They communicate by going elsewhere.

The 7-10 day mixing protocol

Standard transition for any cat litter change:

  • Days 1-3: 75% old litter, 25% new
  • Days 4-6: 50% old, 50% new
  • Days 7-9: 25% old, 75% new
  • Day 10: 100% new

If at any point your cat starts going outside the box, slow down. Go back a step for a few days, then try again.

Tips that help the transition

  • Use a separate test box first. Add a second box with the new litter alongside the old one. If your cat uses both, you can transition the original. If they avoid the new one, you've learned without causing accidents.
  • Don't change anything else. Same box, same location, same depth. Only the litter blend changes.
  • Keep the box CLEANER than usual during the switch. Less smell helps acceptance.
  • Stay unscented. Most cats prefer it. Especially during a switch.

Why we like tofu litter

Tofu litter has gotten popular for good reason. Made from soybean fiber, it has some real advantages:

  • Flushable (in most municipal systems, but check yours)
  • Lighter than clay (a big bag is half the weight)
  • Less dust, better for cats with respiratory sensitivities
  • Tracks less than fine clay
  • Plant-based and biodegradable
  • Clumps well for easy scooping

Most cats accept it during a proper transition. Some refuse the texture (it's larger pellets than fine clay), and that's okay. Try and see.

Other litter types worth knowing

  • Clumping clay (bentonite). The standard. Cheap, effective, fine grain. Heavy and dusty.
  • Silica crystal. Lasts longer, less smell. Some cats hate the texture.
  • Pine pellets. Eco-friendly, but pellets feel different. Some cats accept, many don't.
  • Walnut. Like wood, plant-based, but darker color makes it harder to see what you've scooped.
  • Paper-based. Often used post-surgery. Soft on healing paws, but doesn't clump well.

If your cat refuses every new litter

Some cats are deeply attached to one specific litter. Forcing the switch causes more problems than it solves. Either:

  • Stay with what works for them
  • Try one more switch with the slowest possible transition (14 days instead of 10)
  • Offer multiple boxes with different litters and let them choose
